Stump Me Questions Answered in November 2005

Q.:  There is an urban legend that the stuntman playing Goose actually died in the filming of Top Gun.  I can go over numerous reasons why I doubt this.  What do you think?
              - Moticka W.

A.:  Actually, it's not that far from the truth.  In 1985, stunt pilot Art Scholl lost control of his plane and died during the filming of Top Gun.  It's doubtful that he was doubling for Goose since Maverick was the pilot.

Q.:  Was Joaquin Phoenix snubbed at the Oscars for his role of Commodus in Gladiator?
              - Caesar C.

A.:  I wouldn't call it snubbed.  He was up against some good competition when he lost in 2000: Jeff Bridges (The Contender), Willem Dafoe (Shadow of the Vampire), Benicio Del Toro (Traffic) and Albert Finney (Erin Brockovich).  Personally, I thought Willem Dafoe should have won, but Benicio Del Toro took home the Oscar that year.

Q.:  Who's name was inscribed on the antique pistol that the predator gave Danny Glover in the movie Predator 2?
              - Kirk D.

A.:  Raphael Adolini 1715.  Judging by the type of gun, I think the writers wanted to hint that the predators faced off against pirates a while back.

Q.:  What is the name of the movie in which Sharon Stone shows her vagina?
              - Greg D.

A.:  Basic Instinct.

Q.:  What does the New Orleans Saints helmet logo mean?
              - No Name Given

A.:  The following comes from the team's official Web site:
Question: What is the name of the logo on the side of the Saints helmets?
Answer: The Fleur de Lis, the emblem most closely associated with the New Orleans Saints and worn on the team's helmets, is a symbol from the Court of Louis XIV. It is a french word that stands for "flower of the lily". The Fleur de Lis is also a symbol for New Orleans, which was adopted during the French occupation of Louisiana from 1682-1762. Traditionally, it has been used to represent French royalty, and in that sense, it is said to signify perfection, light and life. Due to its' three petals, the fleur-de-lis has also been used to represent the Holy Trinity.

Q.:  How many Takatori(s) are onscreen in the recently Americanized series Knight Hunters?
              - Xellchiri

A.:  There are seven members of the Takatori clan in the Japanese version (Saijoh, Reiji, Shuichi, Kikuno, Hirofumi, Masafumi and Mamoru), but only three are in the Knight Hunters series (Masafumi, Hirofumi and Reiji).

Q.:  What is the name of Dudley Do-Right's horse in the cartoon?
              - William R.

A.:  This one's a mouthful:  Horse.

Q.:  What is the name of the white dog that sometimes appeared in Scooby Doo cartoons?
              - No Name Given

A.:  It's his cousin, Scooby Dum.

Q.:  What is the name of Marvin's "space" dog in the Marvin the Martian cartoons?
              - David B.

A.:  His full name is Commander K-9, but he's more often referred to as K-9.

Q.:  In the TV show Saved by the Bell, how many girlfriends did Zach Morris have?
              - Georgia B.

A.:  While Zach dated or chased after a bunch of girls (Tori, Danelle, Joanna Peterson, Stacey Carosi, Andrea, Laura, etc.) his only acknowledged girlfriend was Kelly Kapowski.
