Stump Me Questions Answered in November 2002

Q.:  I am looking for either an Italian or Latin phrase, can you help?  It is either "Labor Spes Volontas" or "La Bor Spes Volontas."
              - Helen M.
A.:   The following is from Mark Riley, Professor of Latin at California State University - Sacramento:

"It is 3 separate Latin words: Labor, Spes, Voluntas.  'Labor, Hope, Willingness' or 'Labor, Hope, Enthusiasm.'  It sounds like a motto, but I don't know what for."

Q.:  What is the Jewish or Yiddish word for "Uncle?"  Thank you for any help you can give me.
              - No Name Given
A.:  Feter.  Thanks to Irving A. for the help.

Q.:  In the movie Pulp Fiction, what the hell was in the suitcase?!  I've heard people say it was money or drugs, but I vote the dancing frog from the Warner Brothers cartoons (before he sold out and went CGI for the WB TV Network).
              - Oz W.

Q.:  Who was the first person to fly an airplane across the Andes Mountains (first name must be given not just initial)?
              - Lynne H.
A.:  On April 13, 1918, Lieutenant Luis C. Candelaria mad the first flight across the Andes Mountains, flying from Argentina to Chile.

Q.:  Why does pot make you hungry?
              - No Name Given
A.:  Scientists have found that marijuana-like substances naturally produced in the brain, called endocannabinoids, stimulate appetite.  The study showed that these endocannabinoids are part of the brain's complex system for controlling when and how much to eat.  Scientists have known for several years about the existence of these substances, which are chemically similar to the active ingredient in marijuana but do not make people high.  Thanks to Zach for the help.

Q.:  The "Civil War" or "War Between The States" was fought for what reason?  Meaning...What split the states?
              - Chris D.
A.:  Historians have long argued about the actual causes of the U.S. Civil War, but it's generally agreed that there were three major strains of argument between the North and the South.

1)  Differences over economic issues.  The North's economy was based on industry and trade while the South's was based on agriculture.

2)  Political issues that could not be worked out.  The South wanted a weak central government and more control in the states while the North wanted a strong central government which could help regulate trade and promote industry.  As well, the question of slavery came about, including which new territories would be free or slave states as the country continued to grow.

3)  Cultural and philosophical differences about slavery as a whole.  Abolitionists believed the enslavement of African-Americans was philosophically and morally wrong while southerners were willing to tolerate the system as an economic necessity and did not wanted to end it.  However, the issue of slavery didn't reflect upon personal attitudes about the slaves as a people.  Neither side believed in black American equality.
