Stump Me Questions Answered in April 2001

Q.:  Where does the saying, "music hath charms to soothe the savage breast" come from?
              - Tom King

(It's supposed to be beast  - Glenn)

April 22nd:
When you find the quote, or at least the one I sent to you, it is "breast."  I along with many others have quoted it wrong for many years.  My wife the English teacher corrected me.
              - Tom

A.:  The saying comes from William Congreve's The Mourning Bride: A Tragedy,  which dates back to 1697.  It's also the source of the line, "Heaven has no rage like love to hatred turned, Nor hell a fury like a woman scorned."

Q.:  Why are fender washers called fender washers?  I've been wondering for years.
              - Selina
A.:   According to a dictionary of etymology (word origins), a fender is something that protects by keeping other things off.  The word actually dates back to 1615 and comes from the Middle English word fendour, which means defender.  The fender washer is nothing more than a washer that protects the surface of an object

Hope that clears things up for you.

Q.:  why are guys such idiots  especially you
              - No Name Given
A.:  The answer to your question is no...men are not idiots, and apparently I'm not one either.  I even performed a very well organized survey about male idiocy to see if men were indeed idiots, and if so...why?

The following are the questions, summary of answers and the gender breakdown.

Gender Breakdown:
Male - 10
Female - 3
It's important to note that more women than men were sent this survey, but for some reason more men were able to figure out how to reply to my e-mails.

Question 1 - Why are men idiots?
The vote was close with 6 people believing that men are not, in fact, idiots; 5 people believing men were idiots; and 2 answers I couldn't figure out how to classify.  Among women, 2 of the 3 respondents felt that men were idiots.  By the way, you'll REALLY want to check out the answers to this question.

Question 2 - Why am I (Glenn Weintraub) such an idiot?
Five people agree with you that I am an idiot (those bastards), while two people thought you were wrong - although I'm apparently a lot of other things.  Three answers couldn't be classified and three others didn't answer that question at all (should I be concerned about that?).

Question 3 - Should there be a support group for men dealing with idiocy?
Eight people said yes, while two people said know (the other three didn't answer). Of the two who said no, one felt that the women who deal with male idiots should have a support group.

Question 4 - Is male idiocy hereditary?
This is the question that provided the greatest insight.  Only three people, all men, thought male idiocy was hereditary.  Three more people felt that it wasn't, including one woman.  But four people, including the other two women, thought that it was a combination of the gene pool and several outside factors (and they may be right).

Question 5 - Should male idiocy be considered a disease? If yes, should it quality for disability benefits?
Apparently, nobody likes to help those in need.  Only four people felt that it should be considered a disease, but two of those four thought that the money should go to a support group for those dealing with the men affected by male idiocy.  Six people felt that it wasn't a disease with a few who felt it was an offspring of something else.

Question 6 - Are cross dressers affected?
I asked this question only in the interest of science, and I didn't even get the answer I was looking for.  I was hoping to find out if a female cross dresser would be affected by male idiocy.  Evidently, nobody really knows how to classify a cross dresser.  Four people thought that cross dressing was idiocy taken to a new level.  One person simply said yes, and five others...well, they either weren't sure or wanted to know if I was hiding something (I'm not telling!).

So there you go, Ms. No Name Given. I hope that answers your question.  Click here if you want to see the answers to questions 1 & 2 (since these directly answer her question).
