The Ending - David Aames killed himself and
is cryogenic stasis for most of the movie. David had
signed up with Life Extension (L.E. - that's who the mysterious
"Ellie" is) to preserve his body. In fact, a
good portion of the movie consists of false storylines that turn
out to be dreams. In reality, David did not have plastic
surgery on his face to repair the damage done in the car
accident. He also didn't see Sofia the night he passed out on the
street after partying with Sofia and Brian. His entire
life starting from when Sofia wakes him on the street - including the murder,
his arrest, and his interaction with Dr. McCabe - are all part of
the Life Extension program. Dr. McCabe takes David to the
L.E. offices where they listen to the sales pitch. It turns out that
a client can sign up for a special program that enables them to stay in a dreamlike state while
they are frozen. The client is also in control of all the aspects
of their dream, and can decide at what point in their life the dream begins.
The problem is that his subconscious took over his dreams and
turned them into a nightmare. His guilt for committing
suicide and for what happened with Julie turn out to be the
likely causes. Once David figures it out he calls for the
L.E. tech to help him (it turns out to be the same guy who's
been seen throughout the movie). David and McCabe are
taken to the top of a building where he explains to David his
options. David can remain in stasis, but with a repaired
program so he doesn't live a nightmarish life, or he could jump
off the building and awaken 150 years in the future, where they
can repair his face, but he won't be rich. He says goodbye
to Dr. McCabe and Sofia, then jumps off the building. He falls,
but just before he hits the ground, you hear a nurse telling him to open his eyes.
Then you see an eye opening.
