The Ending - Dr. Sobol ends up helping
Paul come to grips with the source of his anxiety - that he

as Paul's getting ready for the summit he sees a
commercial about a father and son and ends up having another
breakdown. Jelly
interrupts Dr. Sobol's wedding and forces him to attend the
summit in Paul's absence. Paul eventually makes it to the
summit and retires from mob life, but not before getting into a shootout with his rival, Primo Sidone.
At the start of the
gunfight, Dr. Sobol is shot with a bullet that would have hit
Paul. The feds bust the summit and arrest a bunch of the
mob bosses. Vitti, in prison, shows his gratitude to Dr.

The Ending - Just about everything that
could go wrong did go wrong. While stirring the
oxygen tanks some faulty wiring causes one of the tanks to
ignite, blowing apart one side of the spacecraft. Here's a
list of the problems (and solutions) as they come up:
1) The
batteries may run out out before the ship returns to
earth. Solution - they run on only 12 amps of power for
the bulk of the trip back.
2) The level of carbon dioxide is rising and the square
filters they have available won't fit in the round filter
slot. Solution - The engineers at NASA come up with a way
to create an air filter using tape, a bag, the cover of the
flight plan, a hose, and few other things.
3) The flight trajectory is coming in shallow because
they didn't land on the moon (the ship is lighter than
expected). Solution - they perform a 30 burn of the
engines to get back on course. Since they don't have
access to the ship's navigation system (the power's pretty much
off), they try to stay on course by tracking a fixed object from
the window...the earth.
4) The ship's power up sequence keeps going over the
available 20 amps. Solution - Ken Mattingly, in the
simulator for several days, figures out that he can grab 4 amps
from the LEM and is able to generate the startup sequence.
5) The flight trajectory is still coming in
shallow. Solution - they transfer a bunch of ballasts and
other heavy objects from the damaged portion of the ship to the
lunar module.
6) There's a typhoon warning on the edge of the prime
recovery zone. Solution - There's nothing they can do
about that. The typhoon threat doesn't amount to anything.
7) The heat shields may have been cracked during the
explosion. Solution - Nothing they could do about this
one, too. It turned out that the heat shields were fine.
The ship goes into blackout as it re-enters the atmosphere,
but it takes longer than the usual three minutes to reacquire
the signal. Eventually, the ship does land in the ocean
and the astronauts survive.

The Ending - The Freedom and Independence
make the trip around the moon and approach the asteroid from
behind, but the moon's gravity wasn't strong enough to clear out
most of the asteroid's debris. The Independence is
destroyed and crash lands on the asteroid while the Freedom
overshoots its landing spot and ends up on a compressed iron
plate. The Freedom crew starts drilling, but are unable to
get any significant depth. The team's armadillo hits a gas
pocket and explodes, killing Max. Meanwhile, A.J., Bear
and Lev Andropov survive the Independence's crash landing and
reunites with the Freedom crew. They continue drilling and
hit another gas pocket, but this time they're able to drill
through it and successfully dig a hole deep enough for the
nuclear warhead to destroy the asteroid. Another explosion
on the asteroid causes the remote detonator on the warhead to
break, meaning somebody will need to stay behind and manually
detonate the bomb. Everyone draws straws and A.J. is
chosen to stay behind, but as Harry escorts him out of the
shuttle he breaks A.J.'s air line and replaces him on the
asteroid. The Freedom leaves the asteroid and Harry
detonates the warhead, saving the earth. A.J. marries
Grace.
